Italian · 必比登

Carb-loading has never been more gratifying. In Old Pasadena, this chef-driven restaurant continues to thrive with locally sourced ingredients and a dazzling selection of boldly prepared pastas, all of which are made in house. For sure, there is nothing timid about this cooking – and many dishes should probably be shared. Consider the stack of roasted market carrots set on smooth labneh and blanketed in Aleppo and honey or the fan favorite, platter-sized spaghetti and meatballs, which comes with garlic bread. Best of all might be the torchetti, a tangle of twisted noodles coated in a rich pork

Chifa

chinese, peruvian · 必比登

"Chifa" is a term referring to a delicious mashup of Peruvian and Chinese cuisines. If the green velvet chairs and zebra-print walls aren't enough of a clue, look to the team who isn't shy about anything. The succinct menu pulls from family recipes and childhood memories to pack in flavor at every turn. Start easy with Japanese sea bream soaking in an orange and lime sauce, before moving on to char siu, starring pork cheek finished on a wood-fire grill—it's the stuff of barbecue dreams. Your visit would be incomplete without the lomo saltado, featuring tender chunks of filet mignon and sauteed

Villa's Tacos

Mexican · 必比登

Sweet smoke from a roadside taco stand blows across the Highland Park parking lot, but the crowd gathered in front of Chef Victor Villa’s taqueria doesn’t budge. This brick-and-mortar marks a milestone for a chef who first started serving out of his grandmother’s house. The signature queso taco is instantly recognizable, built on a blue corn masa tortilla stacked with refried beans, onion, cilantro, guacamole, cotija cheese, crema and a melted skirt of Monterey Jack. Variations with asada and chorizo are favorites, with vegan options on offer as well. Colorful, messy and filling, these tacos t

Agnes

American, Californian

$$$

Maybe it's because you enter through Vanessa and Thomas Tilaka Kalb's cheesery, where you can pull up a chair for an appetizer and a glass of wine, or maybe it's the appealing menu, but Agnes is especially inviting. Start with a cheese board or tinned fish to share, then snack on items like fried cheese curds with dill ranch dressing and honey mustard pickles. Salads show off their fondness for local products; house-made pastas are satisfying; but it's the live-fire hearth that draws all eyes. You'll never go wrong with a plate of fried chicken with sambal hot honey sauce and house-made pickle

Perle

French

$$$

This quaint French bistro feels right at home in downtown Pasadena. The cozy space draws in anybody walking by, thanks to vintage frames, sturdy Mahogany tables, and a coffered wood ceiling. Whereas many restaurants are content to merely look like a French bistro, in this one Chef Dean Yasharian has the chops to cook like one too. There is no need to reinvent the wheel and he knows it, carefully preparing such sleek, straight-shot Parisian classics as Burgundy snails glistening in herbed butter; silky-smooth pork pâté wrapped in pastry; and duck à l’orange with celery root purée. Dessert is ess

Sichuan Impression

Chinese, Sichuan · 必比登

Long hailed as one of the top tables in the area, this Sichuan stalwart is settling into its new home just two miles away from its previous address in Alhambra. All of the usual hits are still in play—tea-smoked duck, big mouth ginger frog, mapo tofu—and the kitchen is still armed with its usual scarlet-red numbing oils and fiery, chopped chilis. One recent highlight was a cauldron of fish and rattan pepper boiled in a thrillingly complex broth rippling with numbing, spicy tones. A private room will serve large parties particularly well. All to say, the airy space, with its big windows and bri

Lunasia Dim Sum House

Chinese, Dim Sum · 必比登

Few kitchens can prepare a noodle roll quite like this local Alhambra favorite. Rice wrappers filled with gently cooked lobster and finished with a subtly sweet soy sauce arrive on a platter set with the lobster shell itself for a presentation that draws attention from all corners. Indeed, this kitchen puts a fine edge on the area’s dim sum scene. There is not a single cart roaming this elegant dining room, which in turn is managed by a team of fast and friendly servers who will ensure that you never leave less than stuffed. Traditionalists will want to end with a rich egg tart, but for a more

Carnes Asadas Pancho Lopez

Mexican · 必比登

Humble doesn’t even begin to describe this open-air restaurant, which has no walls and is seemingly built out of corrugated metal. But what comes out of the kitchen is anything but simple. In quiet Lincoln Heights, find a limited menu that excels in tender, stewed meats and soulful soups. The chef mines the memories of his hometown of Jalisco with carne en su jugo, a superb, meaty soup made from tomatillos, bacon, pinto beans and beef. Birria en consommé is another warming, brothy hit, packing in more delicacy and nuance than the typical effort. There must be tacos, of course, and tortillas ar
