Le Julien
French, Modern French · ★ Michelin

Davy Devlieghere is back in his native village in the company of Marie-Julie, your hostess. This tastefully restored farmstead oozing with character sports a luxurious vibe and a tasteful colour scheme to celebrate French fine dining. First-class ingredients, like Anjou pigeon and sole, are allowed to shout their name thanks to last-minute preparations and rich sauces. The chef is a fan of wholesome, big-boned recipes, although he isn’t averse to sneaking in the odd exotic note.He may pair a warm tartare of langoustine with a frothy langoustine bisque and a tapenade of piquillo pepper, fresh s

A black and white tiled floor and an open fire set the scene in this plush bourgeois 19C home, but the comfort is entirely 21C, as is the splendid terrace to the rear. The chef has opted for a playful lineup of international influences, without forgetting his classical heritage. He might pair a tataki of bonito with a sweet-sour vinaigrette, or medium rare veal with black truffles, a tarragon mayonnaise and a bordelaise sauce. A choice of four-, five- and six-course menus, all of which overflow with intensity and flavour.

Hof van Cleve - Floris Van Der Veken
Creative · ★★ Michelin

Floris Van Der Veken is following in the footsteps of his mentor, Peter Goossens. He has taken over this elegant welcoming farmstead and culinary landmark, whose codes he continues to uphold. As attentive as ever, Serge Sierens seamlessly supervises the front of house. A quick glance at the menus reveals the importance given to the ingredient. Corrèze lamb rules supreme in raviolis or in a medium rare saddle of lamb coated in a powerful meaty jus. This last-minute approach to dining demands painstaking attention, phenomenal knowhow and a scattering of international notes. The kitchen team atta

Castor

Purity is the name of the game at Castor. The elegant yet brutalist-looking cube on Kortrijkseweg is home to a modern interior of wood, glass and concrete. Stefanie sets the tone of the restaurant’s classy front-of-house style, while Maarten Bouckaert surprises the diner right from the appetisers. From the ingredients and the sauces to the savvy blend of exotic flavours, the chef unveils his talent at every step. Stints with culinary virtuosos of the likes of Peter Goossens enabled him to hone his skills, which he now deploys with tact and sensitivity. Examples: pork cheeks braised in Rodenbac

Broes Tavernier hails his suppliers as “heroes”, which speaks volumes for his commitment to locally sourced produce. From asparagus and fish from the North Sea to partridges, he unfailingly selects the best. His creative, high-flying approach to cooking aims to let the ingredients shout their name. We recommend the insightful wine-food pairing suggestions. After a fine meal in this friendly establishment (great patio), pop into Eetalage and take a few goodies home.

Den Duyventooren

The spruce, traditional façade of this ancestral castle-farmstead hides a vibrant modern interior adorned in warm colours. The peaceful terrace feels light years away from Bellem. The establishment has acquired a faithful cohort of regulars, lured back by Inge Herteleer’s enticing set and à la carte menus. Her seasonal cooking throbs with generosity and is dotted with contemporary touches to which she adds a Mediterranean twist come summertime. The shrimp fritters are stuffed to the brim, while a suave cognac sauce enhances pheasant and green peas and mint contrast with fresh prawns. Searingly

This imposing villa tucked away in the woods is a real gem. Modern artwork, a log burning fire and a wine cellar set the stylish scene, further enhanced by a manicured garden and terrace, ideal for a drink in fine weather. While Marieke spoils guests in the dining room, owner-chef Gregory demonstrates his inventive flair in a modern score, courtesy of cherry-picked ingredients from the region. Seasonings and fermentation techniques add a distinctive touch to his signature cuisine and he enjoys surprising and pushing culinary boundaries, but always with a deft, subtle hand. Bachtekerke
Modern French, Farm to table
€€€
Bachtekerke is undeniably smart, but its pride and joy is a blissful summer terrace on the banks of the Leie, whose secluded, idyllic setting makes you feel as if you are on an island! Even better, the chef has no equal for wholehearted cuisine, oozing in flavour and variety. From dim sum to share, crunchy, piping hot shrimp fritters and melt-in-the-mouth steak tartare to a bona fide patriotic Belgian dish – vol-au-vent, it finds favour with everyone, from gourmet gluttons to discerning foodies…
