Is anyone surprised that the team behind Ramen Gaijin has another hit on their hands? The chefs here have traveled extensively throughout Thailand, which inspired them to bring its flavors back to Sebastopol. Certainly, anyone expecting the sweeter, Americanized side of Thai cooking is in for an awakening. This is food that is seasoned boldly, by turns spicy, fresh and complex. From green papaya salad to fried chicken with a punchy nam jim dipping sauce, flavor abounds. The pastes for all the curries are also made in house, as with a heady massaman curry featuring golden potatoes and meltingly

With more than a decade of history behind it, this Japanese favorite is a must-visit in Sonoma County. Fusing local ingredients with traditional technique, the kitchen delivers a range of top bites, starting with superb chicken karaage with miso ranch as well as crispy tofu with Calabrian chili and toasted sesame oil. Featuring house-made noodles, ramen is the main event. The light shoyu ramen is as impressive as the richer, spicy tantanmen, highlighting pork belly chashu, Sapporo noodles and woodear mushrooms. The best seats at this expansive restaurant are at the counter, where you can watch

Here, in the bucolic loveliness at the heart of Sonoma Wine Country, sense of place combines exquisitely with the deeply personal vision of owners Chef Kyle Connaughton and head farmer Katina Connaughton. The nearby 24-acre farm provides much of the bounty prepared in the kitchen, and the couple’s time in Japan informs the restaurant’s ethos and the kaiseki-influenced cuisine. The menu begins memorably with a botanical landscape interspersed with impeccable first bites that introduce the central themes of the meal: impeccable ingredients, precise knife technique, artistic presentation and pure

Halfway across the globe, the husband-and-wife team of Roberth and Andrea Sundell have brought the flavors of their native Stockholm to their adopted hometown, Petaluma. This cheery, minimal spot plays all the hits: pickled herring, hearty meatballs and house-made sodas. Heavy Middle Eastern and light California touches still manage to creep in, as seen in the skagen — a classic dill-shrimp salad that adds avocado to the mix. The menu also flaunts delicious nods to Sweden’s Middle Eastern community by way of fried halloumi, falafel, tabbouleh and a terrific beef-lamb pita wrap.

This custom-designed domain of Chef Brian Limoge exudes cozy sophistication and is a respectful retooling of a late 1800s Victorian structure in downtown Sonoma. This tasting menu marries global flavors, refined technique and exceptional ingredients, including produce sourced from affiliated Stone Edge Farm, all shot through with subtle nods to the chef’s New England roots. Take, for example, the signature clam chawanmushi which evokes the spirit of chowder. The team shows a masterful hand with grilling, and the complementing sauces surprise and delight, as in luscious hearth-roasted quail ado

Terrapin Creek radiates warmth, whether from the ochre-colored walls, bold artwork or softly glowing fireplace. Chef/owners Liya Lin and Andrew Truong continue to create a welcoming retreat where locals and visitors alike settle in for thoughtful, ingredient-driven cooking shaped by the Northern California coast. The concise, seasonal menu balances comfort with refinement, beginning with dishes like hamachi crudo brightened with basil and sesame oil or pan-roasted Hokkaido scallops paired with sunchoke purée and pickled shiitakes. House-made pasta remains a strong suit, like campanelle tossed

Upscale yet approachable, Chef/owner Ron Siegel's Madcap is one of the Bay Area’s best for contemporary dining. Well-crafted bites on the prix fixe may include a quenelle of tuna tartare with ginger and sesame seeds tucked with a crisp rice cracker that is deliciously simple. Next, a tender, almost-sweet coin of charred octopus rests over a pureed base of fermented pimentos and Tokyo turnip for a clean counterpoint. Supple slices of tart umeboshi, "noodles" of daikon and a creamy ponzu is a creative, pleasure-packed dish, while a tranche of crisp skin-on trout with cauliflower purée and ribbon

You’ll be hard pressed to find more picturesque views than the ones at this charming, sun-lit nook perched right on the edge of Tomales Bay. Under the ownership of Hog Island Oyster Co., the restaurant offers a casual foray into ace seafood that's often been caught or harvested in local waters. Regulars swing by for trays and trays of freshly shucked oysters sourced from California to Washington. Grilled oysters dressed in miso nori butter or chipotle bourbon butter also tempt. Other highlights include mussels steamed in a spicy tomato broth, as well as a signature clam chowder. Seats fill up
