Set within a vast wine estate founded in 1690, this restaurant is ensconced in a meticulously restored old barn. Behind the stone façade, the warmth of old materials and high wooden beams meets with more contemporary touches: a black wall, an open kitchen with state-of-the-art equipment, comfortable furniture, and large windows overlooking the vineyards and surrounding countryside. In the kitchen, the chef cooks up exquisite dishes based on impeccable-quality premium ingredients. Breton langoustine is served alongside pearly-fleshed ikejime John Dory, accompanied by sorrel and a carrot jus inf

Chef Fabrice Rodot is a food lover, and he proves it with his dishes, which feature local and seasonal ingredients. He has a perfect grasp of the classics, and this cosy restaurant with rustic touches is a lovely setting in which to eat: cauliflower in a brioche crust, mousseline cream; organic veal, peas and carrots, sauce Périgueux-style jus; crêpes Suzette flambéed on a pedestal table. Not forgetting the excellent house-made bread! In fine weather, head for a table by the fountain on the terrace.

At the top of the Bergerac vineyards, next to an old windmill, this beautiful and opulent establishment affords an unforgettable view. Chef Damien Fagette taps into the Périgord terroir and its produce, working with Blonde d'Aquitaine beef, foie gras and free-range Périgord chicken. His skilfully and meticulously crafted contemporary cuisine is a successful alliance of fine ingredients, accurate cooking and well-defined flavours: langoustine tartare with a spicy lemongrass shell jus and green asparagus; fillet of beef with Kalamata olives and stuffed morels; warm soufflé with Grand Marnier. This reliably good traditional restaurant is housed in the utterly charming setting of a converted tobacco drying barn, all done out in stone and painted wood. Indeed, the whole site – the local stone buildings of an old agricultural property that was originally a priory – is delightful. Head chef Vincent Arnould, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France, is an enlightened custodian of tradition. A native of the Vosges who fell in love with the Périgord, he selects the finest produce for his modern and appealing cuisine with solid classical foundations. At lunchtime, the restaurant proposes a reasonably p

Here in the Cahors vineyards, overlooking the Lot, this couple, with stints in prestigious MICHELIN-starred kitchens under their belts, have struck the perfect note in their convivial bistro. On weekday lunchtimes, a single, simplified set menu brings in the regulars; the rest of the time, a short à la carte menu and a five-course set menu (excellent value) are served. Antoine Pépin cooks fresh, precise cuisine; Amandine extends a warm welcome and provides expert wine recommendations. Local produce, tableware by artisans, wines from the Lot: the terroir is showcased with sincerity. Booking adv

In a small village overlooking the hillsides, the old village school has been transformed into a restaurant. Welcome to the Gindreau in Saint Médard. Chef Pascal Bardet, originally from Lot and who worked for Alain Ducasse for 18 years, particularly at the Louis XV, is flourishing in his own kitchen. “My cooking is entirely free of set rules,” confides this shy, but confident craftsman. His knack with regional produce, particularly truffles, is indeed second to none. Take a seat under the shade of the chestnut trees and watch the sun set in Quercy.

Forming the heart of the stunning Les Verdots wine estate, this detached building in the local architectural style looks out over the vineyards; a travertine-paved terrace is laid out in front. Inside, the comfortable interior is done out in chic bistro-style decor. Chef Thierry Marx has devised a menu that turns tradition on its head: open-field tomatoes with fresh goat's milk cheese, vanilla oil and strawberries; duck confit served with lentils with carrot and dressed in a mustard vinaigrette; floating island with raspberries and custard. The short wine list, of course, highlights the estate

This country restaurant has put down its roots in a peaceful winegrowing village in a meander of the River Lot. The wine barn of a former winery is the venue for chef Marius Halter to whisk up delicious modern recipes in which premium local produce features prominently, without forgoing finely balanced creative touches (spices, sweet and sour and globetrotting inspirations). Everything is spot on. In addition to gracefully looking after you at the table, Astrid has curated a splendid organic wine list. A pretty patio in the formal French garden.
